About Gord
Racing since 1990, I've been lucky to ride with some great athletes, including competing against the North American pros at Gastown, Delta, and White Rock. As well, the Canadian National Championships in 2004 was a highlight, lining up in the road race with 140 of the best riders for 180km of grueling racing, during an Olympic year. It's been great to rub shoulders with the guys I read about in Velonews during the rest of the year.
I love the long hard road races, but I'm probably a better criterium rider
when it comes down to it. Lots of time spent riding the velodrome the
past few years racing Points and Scratch on the track has helped that
out. Caught the cyclocross bug two years ago and have had great fun in
the mud. Some of my favorite races include: Bradner Road Race, Yaletown Grand Prix, Gastown Grand Prix, Columbia Plateau stage race, and Jericho Cyclocross Classic.
Outside of racing, I am the Vice President and Partner for OpenRoad Communications 10 year old web application development firm. I've also been heavily involved in the volunteering and management of Escape
Velocity and the Burnaby Velodrome since 2000, doing my best to
strengthen the local cycling community. I'm proud of what both of these
organizations have achieved, having received Cycling BC's Road Club of
the Year award for each in 2004 & 2005 respectively.
A message from Gord: “Achieving balance in life is important. Thankfully, competitive road cycling has nothing to do with that, other than staying upright on two wheels. True performance in cycling comes through a dedication and
commitment to the sport, which borders on an unhealthy obsession at
times. It's a hard sport, pushing you to dig deeper into your physical
and mental capacity than you realized you could. It's about suffering
and finding glory in the suffering. And oh yeah, there's a lot of cool gear too! And some great laughs spent with oxygen-deprived and exhausted teammates who also spend too much time killing brain cells and buffering lactic acid.”
