I have been racing since 1987 and as a senior manager and elite masters athlete, I recognize and appreciate the balance, opportunities, heath and success competitive cycling has brought to my life. Cycling, training and competition increases my job performance, improves my capacity to deal with the stress, allow a healthy escape from the office and on many occasions difficult problems and situations have been strategize or solved in the saddle. Cycling truly is a sport for all ages and abilities. For me training and fitness are as much of a drive as is racing.
I enjoy riding and racing anything, anytime - but do prefer the foreign and scenic. My favourites are the French Sportifes! Thousands of riders, hundreds of kilometres, eye candy scenery and miles of vertical climbing. In France, I have ridden Drome, Mount Vonteux, Alpe D’Heuz, Provence, French Riveria, and Bourdeaux. I have also done Italy (Stevio, 9000 feet, Dolomites, Tuscany, Veneto), North America (Sonoma, Napa, Santa Yanez, Marin, San Juan Islands, Olympic Peninsula, Quebec Townships, Gatineau Park, Jasper and Banff, Okanogan Wine Country, Mount Baker, Redondo Beach, PEI, Cabot Trail Nova Scotia), and Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and points in between).
A message from John: “Variety, balance and set goals. Change up training programs regularly, think cycles and have seasonal rhythms and focus. Be consistent in training but don’t fret if life throws you a curve ball – adapt. Think long-term and find other sports and activities to challenge your mind as well as your body. Stretch, brush your teeth, use sunscreen, read, share affection with a loved one, eat oatmeal, wear your helmet, obey traffic laws and don’t run (period) but if you must, not with scissors.”
