Poitras Back On Track

After a long hiatus due to health reasons, I am finally returning to racing. I am feeling better than ever and will be traveling to Australia and China for the first two World Cups of the 2007/08 season.

With some good quality racing at the Burnaby Velodrome under my belt, I am ready to return to international competition with hopes of qualifying for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing, China. There will be 4 World Cup events over the course of the next 4 months that will provide each country with an opportunity to gain valuable Olympic qualifying points.

I leave for Australia on November 23, and will compete in the first event in Sydney Nov. 30-Dec. 2. Immediately following this event, the team will travel to China for round 2 on Dec. 7-9.

Thank you to everyone who has continued to support me throughout my cycling career. I would not be able to do this without you.

I will keep you all posted with my results.

Regards,

Mandy

Many thanks again to all of my sponsors who have made this possible:

Symmetrics Cycling, Norco Performance Bikes, Shimano, Easton Sports, TUFO North America, Rudy Project, PowerBar, Tim Hortons, Cypress Solutions, OpenRoad Communications, Canadian Athletes Now Fund, AVIS Rent-A-Car.

Poitras Crowned BC TT Champion

As the local cycling scene came to a close this weekend with the BC Time Trial Championships in Squamish, BC, both the women's and men's Symmetrics Cycling squads shone, sweeping every title up for grabs.

Racing under cloudy, cool conditions, over 30 women tackled the 38.5km out-and-back time trial course. This is a relatively flat, fast course, with the exception of the final 2km, which is a deceivingly tough false flat to the finish line. Riding my fixed gear track bike, I posted the fastest time of the day of the BC women and became the newly crowned BC Time Trial Champion.

The BC Time Trial Championships were also the final event of the seven race BC Cup Series running from April-Aug. My victory in the Time Trial garnered me enough points to move into 2nd place overall, with my team-mate Marni Hambleton taking home top honours for the second consecutive season.

Poitras Wins Tour de Delta Criterium

With representation from around the world, including two strong 6 member teams from New Zealand and the US, in addition to other strong contenders including former World Junior Sprint Champion and past Tour de Delta winner, Sarah Uhl, we had our work cut out for us. Patience was the name of the game in the criterium as attacks were constantly launched from the New Zealanders, the US Velo Bellas and the Symmetrics women. In the end, in an excellent display of teamwork, the four of us (Leah Goldstein, Marni, myself and Maria Lee) crossed the line with one to go in a perfect lead out train. With myself and Marni finishing 1-2 in the final sprint, I moved up to fourth overall and Marni moved into the lead heading into the next day's road race (Marni had finished 3rd in the hill climb the previous night).

The road race was aggressive from the gun with one of the New Zealand riders quickly gaining close to a minute advantage on the field. Factoring in the wind, the heat, and the distance of the race, we didn't think she would be able to stay away. However, 4 laps later she was still holding strong, so the chase was on. It was immediately evident that we were not going to get any help from the pack, so three of us rotated the chase to protect Marni. Just inside 50km to go, we had brought the gap down to 15 seconds which allowed Leah and Marni to jump across. The race finished with a group of 6 off the front (including the original aggressor), with Marni winning the final sprint and taking the Tour de Delta overall and Best BC rider award.

There is nothing more gratifying than putting it all on the line and having your team come out victorious. BC Superweek was truly a team effort, and even though there are a few races left before this season comes to a close, we are already excited about next year. With Leah joining the team mid-season, there were very few races in which the four of us had the opportunity to race together. We are looking forward to a strong 2007 as both Leah and myself look to qualify for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.
