Mandy Wins at Spring Series
It was another beautiful day of racing as sixty-seven group B riders lined up under sunny skies to contest the rolling 8km circuit on the zero avenue race course. The pace was relatively slow for the first half of the race - perhaps racers were thinking about their legs for the next day's course up Armstrong Hill. A few attacks came each lap up the hill on the back side of the course, but the group wasn't content to let anything stay away. I sat nicely near the front, marking moves and helping to bring anything potentially dangerous back to the pack. It wasn't until four laps to go that things really started to heat up.
With a lot of fresh legs in the pack, and a lot of racers not wanting it to come down to a group sprint, the attacks began one after the other to try and splinter a group off the front. Me and my Symmetrics teammate Maria rode aggressively at the front to make sure they were able to cover everything. Within the last 4 km a group of five were able to get a small gap and with the help of Sugoi rider Bryan Anderson, I was able to bridge across to set up for the final sprint. However, the pack was charging hard behind and the group was caught with less than 2km to the finish. I attacked just before the final corner, with one other racer entering just ahead of me. Racing to the line, I took the first victory of the 2005 season for the Symmetrics women.
