Track Nationals - Day One
The Tim Hortons National Track Championships commenced today with the 3km Individual Pursuit. Representing Rocky Mountain/PowerBar, I qualified 1st with a 3:57, 5sec ahead of the next fastest qualifier, Julia Bradley of Ontario. We will ride off for the gold tomorrow afternoon. My next event of the day was the Scratch Race. I knew going into this 10km event that patience was going to be the key. On such a long track (400m) - most international meets are held on 250m tracks - you really have to change your game plan. Knowing that my two closest competitors hadn't done the Individual Pursuit earlier in the day, I knew I couldn't lead out the sprint too early. Unfortunately circumstances dictated a different outcome than I had hoped and I found myself leading out the sprint into the headwind with 300m to go and Gina Grain of Victory Brewing right on my wheel. It was an exciting drag race to the finish line with Gina taking the victory in a photo finish. More later. Happy Canada Day!!!
