Poitras to Represent Canada at Commonwealth Games
It was confirmed this week that I will be part of the 19 member team who will travel to Melbourne, Australia in March to represent Canada at the 2006 Commonwealth Games. As this will be my first trip to the Games, I am extremely excited (in the past Canada has not sent any endurance track women). Teamwork paid off at the Los Angeles World Cup showing the Commonwealth Games selection committee that it would be worthwhile to send both Gina Grain and myself to represent Canada on the track. All nations are allowed 3 entrants per event at the Games, but Canada was only going to send one track woman to battle against a full contingent of British, Australian and New Zealand riders.
At the LA World Cup, Gina had the potential to medal if she could win the final sprint in the points race. I did everything I could in the last four laps of the race to try and provide that opportunity for her (see attached photo). Unfortunately she came up one place short in the final sprint placing her 5th overall. However, this was enough to prove to the committee that we can work as a team to battle the strong Commonwealth women as Gina finished 1st of the Commonwealth countries.

I have also been selected to compete in the road race at the Games, joining my track team-mate Gina Grain, in addition to Sue Palmer-Komar, Lyne Bessette, Erinne Willock and Amy Moore. All of these road riders have represented Canada in the past at either the Olympic Games or the World Championships, and it will be my pleasure to ride in support of these talented Canadian athletes at such a prestigious event. Prior to the Games, we will be travelling to Sydney, AUS to compete in the final Track World Cup, March 3-5. We will then move on to Melbourne and settle into the athlete's village until the commencement of the Games on March 16. Many thanks to everyone for your continued support: Rocky Mountain Bicycles, PowerBar, Tim Hortons, Shimano, Easton Sports, TUFO North America, Rudy Project, Symmetrics Cycling, Cypress Solutions, OpenRoad Communications, Adidas, Basic Sports Nutrition, AVIS Rent A Car, Race Face Headsets, GiroPoste, See You In Athletes Fund, and Emer'gen-C.
