2003 Racing Season Ends on a High Note
December 9, 2003
I have just received great news that I have met the Canadian Olympic
Committee (COC) qualification standards to represent Canada in Athens.
I am only one of two track cycling athletes to meet the criteria, and
the only track cyclist to meet it in my discipline - the points race.
Although I still need to qualify a spot for the International Olympic
Committee (IOC) criteria through the 2004 World Cups and Worlds, I am
one step closer to realizing my Olympic dream. Having met the COC
criteria prior to commencing my season definitely alleviates some
pressure.
International Olympic qualification will begin in February where I will be
representing the Tim Hortons Canadian National Team in Moscow, Russia for
the opening round of the 2004 World Cup season. Following Moscow, I will
head to Mexico in March; Manchester, England in April; and Sydney and
Melbourne, Australia in May.
The top two riders from the World Cup Rankings will gain automatic
entry into the Olympic Games with the Worlds in Melbourne to fill the
remaining Olympic spots. Olympic selection should be finalized by the
end of May, immediately following the World Championships.
I am looking forward to a very exciting season as I prepare to get my
spot in the points race in Athens.
Coming up in the near future will be the Burnaby Velodrome event to be
held January 9-11. Representing Rocky Mountain/PowerBar, this will be
great preparation for the World Cups as I will be racing against some
of the top pro men in North America, including both Canadian and USA
National Track Team riders.
Thank you to everyone who has been supporting me on my Olympic quest:
Rocky Mountain Bicycles, PowerBar, Tim Hortons, Shimano, Easton
Sports, TUFO North America, Rudy Project, Adidas, Basic Sports
Nutrition, AVIS Rent A Car, Louis Garneau, Race Face Headsets,
GiroPoste, See You in Athens Fund.
Best wishes for the fast approaching holidays.
