TT CHAMPS CROWNED IN SQUAMISH - AUG 6/05

The annual BC Provincial Time Trial Championships presented by Team Escape Velocity took place in Squamish, BC on Saturday. Over 110 participants in all major categories as well as handcyclists participated in the event. With the scenic Tantalus mountain range as the backdrop, riders raced out and back on the 38.5km Squamish Valley Road, which included a tricky headwind and a deceiving uphill in the finishing 2km.

Christian Meier of Symmetrics clocked the fastest time all day, a blistering 47:09, averaging 48.98kmh on the winding course. The New Brunswick cyclist could not take the provincial espoir champion jersey however, as he holds an NB license. Michael Simpson of West Vancouver took second in espoir men and the provincial champ title.

Meier's teammate Min Van Velzen (Symmetrics) made up for it, taking the senior men's title with a time of 49:01. Jeff Sherstobitoff (Symmetrics) and Costa Rican rider Neives Carpasco (Dospinos) rounded out the senior men's podium, selected from a competitive field which included Ironman Canada and Ironman Hawaii champion, Peter Reid (5th - 50:29).

In the women's race, Erinne Willock (Webcor) caught and passed her minute man Tony Zarsadias (Symmetrics) with ease, on her way to a 10 second victory over multiple national champion, Mandy Poitras (Symmetrics) with third place going to Lee Darling (Team Coastal).

Provincial Champions:

Senior Men: Min Van Velzen (Symmetrics)
Senior Women: Erinne Willock (Webcor)
Espoir Men: Michael Simpson
Junior Men: Jeffery Castenmiller (Lactic Acid)

*Note: Junior Women did not have enough to field an official Provincial Championships. Kyla Giesbrecht (Lactic Acid) won her category.

NAOMI COOPER WINS JUNIOR OF THE YEAR AWARD - Jan 19/05
Courtesy Allan Prazsky, Cycling BC

Cycling BC proudly awards the Joe Hailey Memorial Award for 2004 to Naomi Cooper. As a first year junior in 2004, Naomi won the Junior BC Road Championships, and medaled (silver) at the National Road Championships and again (silver) in the 2000m Individual Pursuit at the Track Nationals. Naomi represented her country, and British Columbia, at both Road and Track World Championships in 2004.

This Award was established in 2003, in memory of Joe Hailey, a fixture on the BC road and track cycling scene for over 20 years. The Joe Hailey Award is granted annually to both provide recognition and financial help to a young athlete attending Road and/or Track Nationals. The winner of this Award is recognized as one of the top young athletic prospects for the sport of cycling in BC. Each year the award is presented to either a second year Cadet, successfully upgraded to Junior age category, or a first year Junior, to help offset travel costs to the National Road or Track Championships. The dollar amount of the award varies by year, depending on travel costs to the National Championship(s).

Seed funding for this award was provided by the estate of Joe Hailey. Additional funds for the Joe Hailey Award have been raised through the Joe Hailey Stage Race, hosted by dEVo (the development team of the Escape Velocity Cycling Club) and through donation. Cycling BC manages this award through the Road, Track & Cyclocross High Performance Committee. Additional donations to this award through Cycling British Columbia are gratefully accepted.

The winner of this Award in its first year was second year Cadet, Scott Crump, who received $500 to help attend the 2003 National Track Championships in Quebec, and who subsequently won two Junior National titles. With both Road and Track Nationals in BC in 2004, the award is less ($100) while the recognition is equally well deserved.

Congratulations to Naomi and thanks to all those who have contributed to this award.

YEAR IN REVIEW - Dec 29/04
Another 12 months has whizzed by us, like the road under our wheels. We take this moment to look back at some of the highlights of the year, recognize our finest, and look forward to another great season of bicycle racing in BC.

2004 Escape Velocity Award Winners

Mike Haywood Mechanically Declined: Michael Haywood
Our esteemed President managed to have a few mechanicals this year, the most exciting of which occured with his brand new 10 speed Cannondale and its "Mystery Braking" behaviour, where the bike would slam on the brakes, even though Mike had not. Reminder kids, always make sure the shifters are securely mounted to your bars, lest they slip and tug on your brakes violently.

Dedication to Training: Gord Ross
Flattered to receive this award, Gord managed to squeeze in a solid year of training under the coaching of Jeremy Storie, proving that you can ride Road Nationals and have a respectable race or two on an average of 8 to 10 hrs of riding / week. Not recommended, but it is possible.

Naomi Cooper Most Improved: Naomi Cooper
The only Escape Velocity/Devo member to be selected to the Canadian National Team this year, Naomi Cooper is following in her brother Marsh's footsteps by turning into one of the best junior women cyclists in Canada. Naomi went to Jr. Track World Championships in Los Angeles, as well as competing for Canada on the road at the Jr. Road World Championships in Verona Italy. We look for more things from this talented young woman in the future.

Wheel Suck: Rich Woo
Sometimes honourable, this year not, Rich Woo proved to be a talent at sitting in and hiding from the wind this year. Not much more really needs to be said.

Favells Famous Folly (best crash): Ryan Cousineau
Ryan Cousineau becomes the first recipient of the "best crash" award to have not actually crashed. Instead, Ryan was in the middle of no less than 3 crashes on club rides, all of which featured friends of his that he'd invited along. Road rash, broken collarbones, and collapsed lungs were the result. Runner up: Gord Ross's 75kmh Superweek-ending Tour de Delta crash.

Most Likely to Flat: Jak New
When not out training for Ironman, Jak was flatting. Or about to flat. Not an award you want to be on the receiving end of.

Brian Storey Keeper of the Flame: Brian Storey
Breathing some new life and enthusiasm into the club is Brian Storey. A member for a few years now, Brian was instrumental in our Sisu sponsorship, was active at the end of the season racing in Oregon with EV and Devo, and was the catalyst for formalizing the EV Elite program scheduled for 2005. Brian's skills and passion made a difference this year.

    Photo: Greg Descantes

Ian "Fingers" Lockley, Jeff Ain, and Pam Egger capped off strong finishes at the classic Tahuya-Seabeck-Tahuya road race on Sunday in Washington State, all finishing top 5 in their respective categories. Ian Lockley took a strong 3rd place in the Cat 3 race after a disasterous warmup that saw his right hand make its way into his front wheel, slicing up two very important shifting and braking fingers. Jeff Ain picked his way through the pack debris of the Cat 3 race to take 4th place in the Cat 4 race, and Pam Egger finished strong to take 5th in a hard fought Women's race. John Tolkamp managed a top 20 finish in the Cat 1/2 event after being caught 50m from the line by a charging pack and Gord Ross squeaked into the top 15 for the Cat 3 race. Next stop for the US races: Walla Walla, this upcoming weekend (Apr 24/25).

Harris Roubaix: Hot & Dusty - Apr 12/04

Jeremy Storie takes the Cat 3 race
    photo: Greg Descantes

Devo program director and resident hard-man Jeremy Storie lived up to his words and emerged victorious in the Cat 3 race at the BC Cup season opener, the Harris Roubaix. Jeremy took the pack sprint at the end of a dusty 80km ride that took the ever-dwindling pack over a bumpy 900m section of gravel dike nearly 10 times. In the Cat 1/2 event, Eric Kameka scored a top 10 finish and Nina Krack and Naomi Cooper finished well-up in the women's race. Full results from Trek/VW have yet to be posted. More pics and stories as we get them.

Escape Velocity Honours its Finest - Nov 29/03

Steve Pipkey and Raegan McLallen hosted the annual year-end wrap up party for Escape Velocity, finishing off another successful year for the team, its members, and competitive cycling in the Lower Mainland. Part of the annual wrap-up party is the presentation of club awards. These club awards are prestigious, with much history and honour associated to them. Winning one is not to be taken lightly: it is a symbol of your importance at Escape Velocity.

Without further ado, onto this year's 2003 Escape Velocity Award Winners:

    1. Mechanically Declined -- awarded to those with serious mechanical dysfunction

    2003 winner: David Goosen
Runners up: Jordan Guenette, Ken Johnson

"Duct Tape" Goosen (aka "Goose") won this award due to his spectacular rear-derailleur blow-up at Columbia Plateau, which even after it was broken, he managed to ride a couple of stages on it, only giving him access to a few gears. He was seen to be "Ulrich-ing it" up one of the Oregon stage-races many climbs, pedaling as if it were one of Jeremy's Strength Endurance workouts (50rpm or less).

    wonder couple, Pam
and John 2. Dedication to training -- Speaks for itself.

2003 winner(s): John Tolkamp, Pamela Egger

Jointly awarded this year, John and Pam put a ton of hours and mileage into having an amazing season, with 3 championships for Pam at Canadian Nationals and North American Masters Nationals, and a bronze for John at Canadian Nationals.

    4. Wheel Suck -- Sometimes honourable, sometimes not

    2003 winner: Pamela Egger

Joining the Dede Willans club of "wheelsuckers", Pamela had many a motorpacing session with John... less the motorized scooter. No small feat of endurance and strength, many club members have not been able to hold that wheel. This award goes hand-in-hand with the Dedication to Training effort.

Jordan Guenette 3. Most improved cyclist

    2003 winner: Jordan Guenette
Runners up: Blake Bowell, Pamela Egger, Naomi Cooper

Always a hard one to win, especially with a lot of talent floating around the club, Jordan Guenette had a great first season of road racing. As David Schneider said, perhaps he lingered around Cat 3 a little too long near the end of the season, but we'll surely keep an eye out for Jordan next year in Cat 2.

    5. Favell's Famous Folly (aka best crash) -- A new award, based on miscellaneous misadventures

    2003 winner: Marsh Cooper
Runners up: Gord Ross/Doug Jensen and Ken Johnson

Any one of Marsh's crashes this year would have won him this award. In particular, Columbia Plateau's winning-breakaway DNF crash on the last stage and Marsh's Gold Medal Nationals Points Race crash at Bromont, Quebec were reason he took the honours. The "Gordo WTNC birthday leadout" (Gord & Doug) and the Ken Johnson Vets Ride Tandem Crash (tm) were also included.

    6. Most Likely to Flat

    2003 winner: Ken Johnson

Two flats during the Gary Lund Road Race on two brand new tires. Enough said.

    7. Keeper of the Flame -- Most significant EV / cycling contribution

    2003 winner: Steve Pipkey

    Steve showing his enthusiasm
before the start of Day 3 at Columbia Plateau in Oregon Steve was Mr. Tuesday Nighter again this year, having taken on the task for the second year in a row. Endless hours of keeping track of points, fielding silly questions from cyclists, and letting everyone at the start know who our sponsors are, Steve more than often ran WTNC than rode them this year. And to top it off, he threw a helluva year end wrap-up party. (ps Steve, if you have a better picture, please send me one...)

Tuesday Nighters - On Tonight - May 20/03

The rule of thumb for WTNC and wet weather is as follows:if it is raining downtown or near UBC, the race is cancelled. As it's been showering on and off today, we've decided that as of 4:30pm, the race is still on. If it's pouring down by the time we get to UBC at 6:00 PM, we'll probably call it off when we get there. Absolute rules they're not, but it's the best we can do.

Tuesday Nighters Start May 6 - May 6/03

Starting on Tuesday at the University of BC, Escape Velocity Cycling Club brings you Vancouver's most hotly contested bicycle racing of the season. From the first Tuesday of May until the last Tuesday in August, the Tuesday Nighters bring the summer alive with affordable and entertaining racing for all levels. From novice racer to World Champion, all cyclists are welcome.

The 2002 WTNC season ended a few weeks early, due to UBC's construction efforts around Main Mall and Stadium Rd. For 2003, the WTNC course will use a shortened loop around Thunderbird Stadium until UBC has finished its re-paving of Main Mall.

When the construction is finished and the new course is safe to race, we will revert to the popular "long course" used for the past few years. Escape Velocity and Cycling BC has met with UBC Land and Building Services to ensure the continued use of the UBC area for hosting the Tuesday Nighters and we thank them for their support.

For more details, download our race flyer and read more about it here.

Ted Ritter Cycling BC's Volunteer of the Year - Apr 03

Ted and his sideburns in action While his efforts were being recognized for work done at the Burnaby Velodrome (where Ted is the president), all of Escape Velocity can take pride in what Ted has done throughout the years for cycling in BC. Cycling BC wrote the following about Ted's contribution:

Having put countless hours into volunteering, organizing races, and helping guide what is perhaps BC's largest road club, Escape Velocity, Ted Ritter has been named the Volunteer of the Year at the 37th Annual Sport BC Awards.

Ted's involvement in cycling stems back 12 years, where he was involved in the inception of the Escape Velocity Club. Within his time with Escape Velocity, Ted spearheaded the BC Classic, BC's largest stage race, with 6 races over 4 days and 5 locations around the lower mainland.

Ted is an accomplished cyclist himself, securing National Championship medals in both road and track disciplines, and clinching the National Championship (Masters) title itself in 2002. Recently, Ted has played a key role in the fight to keep the Burnaby Velodrome open to cyclists, and is currently the President of the newly formed Burnaby Velodrome Cycling Club. Above all, Ted has been, and continues to be an outstanding role model for up and coming racers, always willing, and usually able to help others in whatever means necessary.

Results are now up for the River Road circuit and the Armstrong Road Race course from this weekend. If you find anything wrong with the results or we're missing your club (if you don't fill it in on your entry form, we don't have a record of it), then please let the webmaster know.

Spring Series #4 - Parking Notice

A quick reminder to all racers that parking for the race on Saturday (River Road loop) is down by the railway tracks, not at the start-finish. We had a complaint from the Township of Langley about using the Fort Winery parking spots and washrooms. They would appreciate that we park in the designated area and not on their property. We would hate to lose these courses due to people parking where they shouldn't, so please be aware of where you put your car and respect our host municipality's residents and businesses.

Spring Series #3 - CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW - Mar 8/03

Race #3 at Bradner (near Abbottsford) has been CANCELLED DUE TO SNOW. As of Saturday night, 10 to 20 CM is predicted to fall and we have reports it is snowing quite heavily out there. Results are now also available from Race #2: Zero Ave. RR.

    SNOW!?! SNOW!?! - Mar 7/03

Yes, we are watching the weather closely. Yes, we know it's scheduled for SNOW tomorrow and Sunday. If it is snowing sideways, there's a good chance we won't be running the races. If it's raining, then there's a good chance that the races will be on.

We'll try to announce it on the website. In the meantime, check out the Vancouver and Abbotsford weather forecasts.
