UPDATE: Jak the DS will be following the ride for support, and as part of that, will be providing updates ("as long as there's cell coverage") via Twitter at his Twitter page. Sweet!
As the web nerd, I haven't been very good at publicizing this, but the Men's Cat 1-2 team is about to attempt something ridiculous, and for a good cause.
This Saturday (June 21st), the fast guys are going to try to do a 290km loop that will take them up the Sunshine Coast to Powell River and down Vancouver Island from Comox to Nanaimo, then back to Horseshoe Bay. There's four ferry trips in there, too:

Yeah, it's a big ride, but the real difficulty is that, owing to the ferry schedule, there is no margin for dallying if you're going to complete the ride in a single day. During the crucial Saltery Bay-Westview leg, our boys have to TTT at 42 km/h for 31 km on not-at-all-flat roads.
The best part is they're doing it for charity. If you're impressed, please contact Jak New (the team manager) at 604.376.2751 or jnew [at] athletica [dot] org to pledge a donation to the BC Children's Hospital Foundation.

And if you're wondering if there's some other way you can help to support this ride, well, understand these riders are beyond help. Bonus: these guys tried last year, and FAILED! (Do follow that link to Gord's ride report, which really gives you an idea of what this ride is going to be like). But they've shed some of the deadwood this time around, and if the ferries are on time and nobody puts their derailleur in the spokes again, these guys will make it.
Good luck, you magnificent lunatics!
