Spring Series: weekend update

It was a wonderful double-header weekend of racing, with great turnouts on both Saturday and Sunday.

March 21 - Zero Ave and 232nd

A cloudy but rain-free day brought out 179 riders across four groups. This flat, lightly rolling course has an uphill drag to the line, making for some agonizingly long sprints.

Novice - the race came down to a bunch sprint won by Josef Johnston over Morgan Hay and Troy Neale.
C group - With no breaks getting away for more than half a lap, this too was a bunch sprint won by Scott Inman (Coastal) over Jason Kilmartin.
B group - Another bunch sprint won by Adam Smith over young guns Graham Laurie (Phoenix Velo) and dEVo's own Curt 'The Hurt' Jung.
A group - Trek Red Truck was very active as was Total Restoration, including late breaks by Jamie Sparling and Rob Britton. In the end it was a (surprise!) bunch sprint with Ryan Anderson (Kelly Benefits Medifast) winning over Chris de Vries (Total Restoration) and Mike Sidic (Garneau Evolution). Rounding out the top 5 was Kevin Calhoun (Rocky Mountain) and Dan Skinner (Garneau Evolution)

March 22 - Armstrong

Ah, the infamous Armstrong hill. Race organizer Jeff Ain actually met Mr. Armstrong, the great-great-grandson of the original Mr. Armstrong who bought that farmland in 19th century.

A warm, sunny day brought out 135 riders in three categories to confront the most selective course in the Spring Series.

C Group - It was attacks from behind, as the bunch slowly lost riders each lap until the final run up the hill. David Stephens took the sprint over Scott Inman (Coastal), and dEVo rider Dustin Brons placed third.
B Group - Just like the C's, it was a race of attrition, won by dEVo's Ben "Mad" Cowburn (dEVo). Young guns Graham Laurie (Phoenix Velo) and Curtis Jung (dEVo) repeated their results from Saturday, taking another second and third place.
A Group - It was the Trek Red Truck Show. The race went full gas from the gun causing a split of 12 riders, including 6 Trekkies. From there, it was constant attacks until Treksters Dave Vukets and Kevin Noiles got away. Vukets soloed for the win, Noiles took second, Nic Hamilton was 3rd, Jamie Sparling 4th, and Rob Britton 5th. Yep, Trek Red Truck Racing swept the top 5! Cyrus Kangarloo from H&R Block Kona was the first non-Trekker to cross the line.

The video up there was by Ms. Dunn, cinematography by Ms. Dunn-Rydh. Photo by Mr. Pope, and there's more where that came from. Official race results for Saturday and Sunday.
