Garneau Evolution, the militant wing of Escape Velocity, has gone out this year and made a name for itself. Their team website says they destroyed the Spring Series, but the dEVos assure me they'll have it rebuilt by next March. Then they went and greviously injured Barry's Roubaix, with GE noob Curtis Deardon taking a sleep-deprived 2nd place.
Next up was a bit of leering suggestively at Race the Ridge, which was apparently good enough for Tim Abercrombie to take fifth, and fifth is considered part of the "extended podium" by people who, um, take fifth.
Then, with David Gerth's punchy 2nd place at Campbell Heights, they fought their way back onto the "real podium" once more, and just to add insult to injury, their directeur sportif Ted "The Architect" Martin placed 9th, and is now leading the provincial DS championships.
But after this warm-up of early podiums, GE faced the 2010 BC road race championships, and promptly beat it to death with Abercrombie taking first and thus becoming The Best BC Road Racer (Hesjedal obviously being too scared to show up for the Sluggo-grade beating that would have ensued).
Abercrombie and Jesse Reams clearly weren't satisfied with that level of savagery, since they went on to score a 3-4 in the Westside Classic, with Reams outsprinting his BC Cup-leading teammate for a few extra overall standings points. That kind of racing paid off, however, as both Reams and Abercrombie have now been selected to (drumroll...) compete in the Tour de Beauce!
Oh come on, I have to explain that? Beauce is a UCI 2.2 6-stage race in Quebec, the biggest race in Canadian Cycling. Jesse and Tim will be there as part of the select Garneau-Club Chaussures Cycling Team, hoping to prove that there ain't no cycling like the west coast cycling, because the west coast cycling don't stop. Here's hoping that our GE boys do so much damage to the race that they make a very special episode of To Serve and Protect about them.
